Custom clothing is the pinnacle of fine dressing… A garment made explicitly for you, through measurement and cloth.  You can be assured that, if using a reputable custom clothier or tailor, that the garment will be made with highest standards of quality, containing more hand work, and attention to detail.

Many items can be made custom; shirts, trousers, suits, vests, sport jackets and overcoats.  Depending on what you need in your wardrobe, it may be in your own best interest to consult with the tailor or clothier you’re thinking of having your garments made through.  He or she will shed some insight on what garments may be best for you, as well as where you need the most amount of work whilst the garment is being made.

There are two different levels of custom clothing; bespoke and made to measure.

Bespoke is the most advance form of tailoring, and the most expensive.  Bespoke tailoring calls for the person who measures you to often cut and do much of the tailoring to the garment while it’s in make.  This means the garment is usually made in house.

Made to measure clothing is typically measured by a qualified individual, styled, and designed at the shop which you choose; than made offsite at a qualified factory or shop.  This is much more common, as the bespoke trade is more and more uncommon.

Style Tips:
  • Custom clothing allows a wider selection of fabric and cut; always consult with  your tailor or custom clothier for option and suggestions about what will suit your body and personal style appropriately.
  • After choosing to have garments cut for you, try to wear in or bring clothes with you that you like the style of and you feel that fit you well to get measured in.  It helps the tailor or clothier understand what you’re comfortable in, as well as look for fit problems that can be corrected when the garment is being made.
  • Because of the nearly infinite amount of fabrics available to you for a custom suit, coat, trouser or other garment; try to have an idea of what you want out of your garment before your meeting.  Do you want a heavy or light cloth?  Flannel or worsted?  Try and have a plan of action or an idea how you want the garment to look.
