Three button coats are considered slightly more contemporary, but in fact date back just as far as the two button coat if not farther. The lapels come in at a sharper angle, which creates a higher midline. This coat compliments a gentleman that’s taller and slighter, or those with elongated torsos. The extra button causes the coat to close higher, and visually compliments longer gentleman much nicely. The top button should sit right about sternum level, and only the top two buttons on this coat should ever be buttoned, as it is what creates the midline (just like a two button coat), the bottom button creates visual symmetry and balances out the front of the coat. This coat, like the two button coat, will always be in style.
