  • It’s always good to have multiple pair of shoes in your wardrobe.  A black oxford (captoe) and a brown or cordovan oxford or derby
  • The most versatile colors in your footwear collection will be brown or burgundy. Browns and burgundies can be worn with grey, navy, brown, taupe and almost every other color except black (unless you are very bold, than they can be worn with black as well).  Black shoes limit your options but are considered very formal.
  • There are many types of formal shoes, for varying occasions.  The patent derby is the most common, and can be worn for most occasions where black tie is required.  A formal slipper (patent with grosgrain trim and bow) can be worn for most white tie affairs, or where a tailcoat is considered mandatory.  A regular black leather derby is appropriate for most morning dress.
  • Footwear with a great amount of broguing (perforations) are considered a lot less formal, and more appropriate for more casual looks or country suitings.
