Double breasted coats are a little more at the mercy of fashion, albeit they are just as historic as the two and three button coats.\

The characteristics of this coat are as such: usually six buttons, where the left side of the coat rests over the two other ones creating two columns of three buttons. Often the bottom right button is left undone, in the same balancing scheme as the two and three button coats. The lapels come in at a very sharp angle, and close up much of the space around the chest. The lapels tend to be very wide, and are often peaked (rather the notched, where the lower part of the lapel that comes into the chest is larger then the collar portion and comes back near the collar to a point). This coat compliments tall, thin gentleman. The reason for this is because the layering process of the front of the coat causes it to cinch slightly more tightly then the two and three button coats, and create a very sharp taper from the shoulders through the waist.

A double breasted suit will always have a place in a gentleman’s closet, but be prepared to hang it up for awhile as it leaves and comes back to fashion often.
