“A gentleman would no sooner walk outside without his shoes on as he would without his hat.”

That isn’t true any longer, as hats have become more of a fashion symbol then a staple of every-day wardrobe.  Hats left the scene in the 1960’s when President John F. Kennedy was inaugurated.  He was the first president ever to be inaugurated without a hat on, and marked the death of hat wearing in America.

We here at Heimie’s feel that a hat is a necessary garment, and is the finishing touch to any outfit.  If you walk into Heimie’s in search of a suit, be prepared to walk out with a suit and a hat.

Hats come in as many shapes and sizes as people on this globe, from the round helmet like bowler, to the wide brimmed c-crown fedora.  The materials they are made out of vary just as much as their shape, from cloth caps to the exquisite blocked fur felt hats.  Not any hat can be worn by any person, and the characteristics of a hat should match that of the wearer.  If you are new to buying hats, put your trust in the haberdasher or sales person, as they can help you find a hat that that will compliment your facial structure and build.

There are a multitude of hats out there, but there are some you’re going to see more than others:

Style Tips:

  • Try and match your hat to your overcoat or suit.  In some cases a contrasting tone may work, such as a navy blue suit with a gray hat.
  • The brim on most fedoras are shapeable, and one should wear it in the style they are most comfortable with.
  • If you have larger, more athletic thighs consider wearing pleated trousers.  If your thighs are more thin, flat front trousers would compliment your form very well.
  • Feathers in hats are removable.  A hat without a feather is just as good as one with.  Feathers or not, it’s up to you.
  • The hat band is a nice part of the hat to match with another part of your garment, like your belt or shoes.  On some hats, the band is interchangeable.
  • Brims fall into three categories stingy (short), average, and wide (broad).  Ask your haberdasher which brim would be best for you.
